Project 2: Rapid Deployment of Engineered Solutions to Environmental Problems

Soil and Groundwater Research – Hanford and SRS

Activities related to the nuclear energy and weapons production at the Hanford Site and SRS have resulted in uranium contamination in the subsurface environment. The objective of this project is to assist environmental cleanup in the vadose zone soil and groundwater at Hanford and SRS seeking a more thorough understanding of contaminants behavior prior to remedy methods application. One of the elements of these efforts is the evaluation of various engineered treatment alternatives targeted to reduce the exposure associated with potential downward contaminant migration from the vadose zone to the groundwater. The project centers on providing technical solutions and needed knowledge through experimental studies and technology development and testing. This project is conducted in close collaboration between FIU and Hanford’s and SRS site scientists in planning and executing laboratory research that support the resolution of critical science and engineering needs leading to better understanding the long-term behavior of contaminants in the subsurface. The research involves state-of-the-art analytical methods and microscopy techniques for characterization of various biotic and abiotic samples.
